LoupeKit vs BuiltWith: which one should you install?

BuiltWith is a technology database first: its own plans page counts nearly half a billion domains, over a hundred thousand tracked technologies and years of usage history, and individual lookups are free forever. The extension puts a BuiltWith Technology Profile one click from any tab, and the paid plans turn the same data into lead lists, alerts and CRM records. If you need to know what a whole domain has run over time, or which companies run a given product, nothing here competes with it.

What a domain has run over the years, and who else runs it: BuiltWith. What this page runs now, with the evidence and the advisories against it: LoupeKit.

BuiltWith

Free lookups · 300,000 users · Chromium and Firefox

A one-click BuiltWith Technology Profile for the site in the tab, drawn from the same database the website sells access to. The plans above the free lookups add technology lists, usage history, alerts, competitor movement, spend estimates, contact exports and CRM integrations, priced per month or per year.

LoupeKit

24-hour trial · ten surfaces · Chromium and Firefox

Detection as a reading of the page that is open, rather than a lookup. 2614 technologies across nine detection sources, each row showing the literal thing that matched - and around it the served versions dated against published advisories, end-of-life dates, licences, subresource integrity and what the bundle weighs.

Where LoupeKit stops, and why

A domain’s technology history
History needs a crawler that visits sites on a schedule and keeps what it found. LoupeKit reads the document already open in your tab and keeps nothing about it, which is what lets each detection show the marker it matched on.
Lead lists, alerts and CRM integrations
That product is built on a database of other people’s sites. This one does not have the permission to build one and does not want the business: it requests no host permissions, and nothing runs without being asked for.
An API and bulk datasets
Answering for a million domains means crawling them, which is a different product with a different cost. LoupeKit answers for one page at a time, on request, from inside that page.

BUILTWITH One click, and the profile comes back from BuiltWith’s index.

LOUPEKIT Detection runs in the page itself, including what only appears after scripts run.

BUILTWITH Technology history is part of the paid plans. This is the product.

LOUPEKIT Not offered. LoupeKit reads the page as it is now.

BUILTWITH The right tool: lists, filters, exports and CRM sync.

LOUPEKIT Not offered, and not planned.

Check a detected version against known CVEs

BUILTWITH Not part of the extension.

LOUPEKIT The served version, dated against published advisories and end-of-life dates.

BUILTWITH Two profiles, read side by side yourself.

LOUPEKIT Pin one page, open another: what each runs alone, what both share, where versions drifted.

Pick BuiltWith if

If the question is about the market rather than the page: which sites run a product, when a domain switched platform, what a list of prospects is built on. That is a database built over years, sold as one, and an extension that reads the tab in front of you cannot answer any of it. Its individual lookups are also free, and stay free.

Pick LoupeKit if

If you are looking at one page and want to know what it runs right now, why the tool thinks so, and whether the version it serves has a published advisory or an end-of-life date against it - along with what else the page ships.

Run both

Reasonable, and they barely overlap in use: one profiles domains from a database, the other reads the tab you have open.

On where the answer comes from

BuiltWith’s extension page describes it as showing BuiltWith Technology Profiles, and its Firefox listing asks for builtwith.com and the active tab: the answer is BuiltWith’s profile of the domain. LoupeKit’s answer is the page itself, read in place, which is why it can name the marker each detection matched and why it reflects what scripts added after load.

CHECKED 22 OCTOBER 2026

Every figure about BuiltWith on this page was checked on that day against its Chrome Web Store and Firefox add-on listings, and builtwith.com, including its plans page and extensions page, and nothing here is quoted from a review. Where a fact is not published anywhere we can point at, the table says so rather than estimating it.
