LoupeKit vs WAVE: which one should you install?

WAVE is made by WebAIM, the people whose WebAIM Million report the rest of the field quotes, and it is free. It injects icons and indicators into the page so every error, alert and structural element is marked where it sits, runs entirely in the browser so intranet and signed-in pages can be checked, and aligns its errors with WCAG 2.2 failures. Around seven hundred thousand people use it on Chrome. If accessibility evaluation is your job, it is a reference tool and this page will not pretend otherwise.

Every accessibility finding marked on the page, free, from the people who wrote the reference: WAVE. Accessibility as one of ten readings of the same page: LoupeKit.

WAVE

Free · 700,000 users · Chromium and Firefox

An evaluator that draws its results into the page: icons for errors, alerts, features, structure and ARIA, with a sidebar holding the summary, the AIM score, a navigation order panel naming each element’s role and accessible name, and contrast tools. WebAIM states that no information is sent to its server, and that no automated tool can tell you a page is accessible.

LoupeKit

24-hour trial · ten surfaces · Chromium and Firefox

An A11y tab with an audit that quotes the measured value per failure, the accessibility tree as assistive software receives it, a contrast checker against AA, AAA and APCA, a vision simulator and a WCAG 2.2 AA conformance statement - plus Focus path, Keyboard walk, Reflow and Tap targets on the Tools tab, and nine other tabs about the same page.

Where LoupeKit stops, and why

An icon on every finding, drawn in the page
The audit is a list in the panel, and each row reveals its own element on the page. Marking every finding at once is what WAVE is built around, and the Developer tab opens WAVE’s own report for this page from its validators.
Free with no time limit
LoupeKit is a paid product after its trial. What the price buys is the other nine tabs as much as this one, which is why the comparison is drawn on scope rather than on accessibility alone.

Pick WAVE if

If accessibility evaluation is the job. WAVE marks every finding in the page at once, which is the fastest way to walk a reviewer or a client through what is wrong, it comes from WebAIM, whose documentation is the reference people cite, and it costs nothing. Nothing on this list replaces it for an accessibility specialist.

Pick LoupeKit if

If accessibility is one of the questions rather than all of them - you are also reading the stack, the layout, the SEO head and the bundle - or if what you need at the end is a conformance statement, a reflow check or a simulated colour-vision view rather than a marked-up page.

Run both

The natural arrangement, and the panel assumes it: the Developer tab’s Accessibility validator opens WAVE’s report for the page you are on.

24-hour trial · no sign-up · both extensions can be installed side by side

CHECKED 22 OCTOBER 2026

Every figure about WAVE on this page was checked on that day against its Chrome Web Store and Firefox add-on listings, and WebAIM’s own extension page at wave.webaim.org, and nothing here is quoted from a review. Where a fact is not published anywhere we can point at, the table says so rather than estimating it.
